Egon Schiele (12 June 1890, Tulln, Austria-Hungary – 31 October 1918, Vienna, Austria-Hungary) was an Austrian painter and draughtsman, and a pupil of Gustav Klimt. After leaving the Viennese Art Nouveau, he created his own impressive style, the mood of which fits within European expressionism. He is the author of provocative nudes in shifting positions, portraits of cities and self-portraits. He often resided and created work in ČeskýKrumlov, the birthplace of his mother.
Among Schiele’s first pieces were self-portraits, of which he created several dozen during his life to comprise the majority of Schiele’s work. In the years before his death, Schiele moved away from painting nudes and focused on rather “calmer” themes.
